Last night around 10:30, Will woke up screaming crying and not able to breath. He was gasping for air and wheezing really bad. We got him calmed down and his breathing improved slightly but we could hear still some wheezing. We called the doctors office and the nurse on call listened to his breathing on the phone. She said to go ahead and take him to the emergency room. When we got there, they got us right back and we saw the doctor very quickly. He listened to his chest and he did hear some wheezing. He recommended a chest xray just to make sure nothing was in his airway. The xray came back good. Will received a breathing treatment and some steroids. By the time we were discharged, he was sounding so much better. The doctor said it sounded like a bronchitis virus and recommended that we take him to his regular doctor today. We were back home around 1:30 am and Will slept all night long.
This morning, Will woke up breathing normally and was in a good mood. I called the doctors office and they got us in at 9:50 this morning. Everything checked out just fine and she just told us to keep an eye on him. She said the steroids they gave him last night could suppress the symptoms for up to three to four days so we just need to make sure in a few days that he doesn't start getting worse. He has had some minor coughing today but nothing like last night.
Last night was so scary for Bryan and I. We really thought he was having an asthma attack, that is what it reminded us of. We are so grateful for the nurse that was on call that late at night. She was so helpful and calm. Even the hospital experience was not so bad. They were fast and very attentive.
We almost made one year before having to make a hospital visit. We were 10 days away! Oh well, things happen and there was no way we could just put him back to bed last night based on the way he was acting. We felt better and I know Will felt better when we got home.
My poor baby taking his first ever breathing treatment.
I am so thankful he is doing better! Hugs to you, mama!
ReplyDeleteGlad he's feeling better! That would be so scary!
ReplyDeleteI am a new reader and love your blog :) Glad that Will is doing better!! Wheezing can be super scary....we have a 2 year old with asthma and he had his first hospital visit at 5 months with it....thankfully we now have a nebulizer at home but it still scares me to death when he gets sick like that!! Will is so cute:)
ReplyDeletehow scary for a parent. Sounds like croup- usually hits in the middle of the night and seems almost totally better by the daytime. Cold air helps the best to open the airway. Sometimes the 2nd and 3rd nights are worse. Hope your little guy is better soon!
ReplyDeleteHi... Stopping by from KK! Your little Will is adorable! I have a little man who will be 1 in June and I live in Lincolnton NC....just right down the road!
ReplyDeleteHi, Stacy from Charlotte! I am Sherry from Charlotte! What a great place, huh? Your little Will is just precious...I have a special place in my heart for adoption! I was adopted at the age of 7 along with my biological brother who was already a teenager! Amazing, huh? My parents were pretty awesome and met us through a church children's home in our area where they went to minister and work as house parents. You could say it was "meant to be." Congratulations on your little bundle of joy...I am also pretty partial to boys! :-)
